Downstream of filling
Proximity switches, tare weights, cappers, coding systems, label applicators, palletisers need to be evaluated to determine what, if any modifications are required.
EcoKegs are rated at 350kPa (50.7psi) Maximum Working Pressure.
EcoKegs must be de-pressurised when empty, by using a dispense coupler once gas and product lines are disconnected. Once all gas has been released simply pierce the side of the keg ensuring the internal bottle is punctured.
EcoKegs have stacking feature moulded into base for stability, tests show that pallets of full kegs can be safely stacked two high for up to six months. An additional pallet and another two high is also acceptable.
One-Way-Kegs are supplied ready for filling and should be kept upside down, indoors and under cover in a clean, dust-free environment.
Compatible with most standard lane and rotary filling lines that accept 50 litre EURO or DIN kegs.
Kegs are compatible with standard loading/unloading and conveying systems, generally speaking they can be pickup up empty or full using grab style forklift trucks, however vacuum style or gripper finger robot picking heads are not normally successful in handling One-Way- Kegs.
Kegs do not require external washing, however if they have to pass through an external keg washer they must remain dry, for example no dripping of cleaning solution onto the keg, as this will adversely effect the integrity of the One-Way-Keg.
Kegs do not require internal washing, EcoKegs are supplied ready to fill, purged and pressurised to 100kpa with CO2 or N2.
Therefore all functionality for internal cleaning needs to be bypassed.
Flood filling is not recommended.
When filling by dispense coupler it is necessary to fill by weight using a set of scales.
When filling using Walking Beam or Rotary machine, it is necessary to fill by flow meter (volumetric).
Automated Filling Lines
Keg shape and valve design, it is possible to balanced pressure fill on semi or fully automated lines.
Only backpressure control and filling steps are required, steam sterilisation of the valve head for 1-2 seconds before and after filling is acceptable, most importantly 30 litre fill is all that is necessary.
EcoKeg utilises Color Matrix’s Amosorb®, an oxygen scavenging polyester concentrate that creates an active barrier against the ingress of oxygen through the walls of PET containers.
One-Way-Kegs have a NINE month shelf life at 20°C (68°F).
In extreme weather conditions >40°C (104°F) a small reduction of shelf life is to be expected. Modelling predicts <10% drop in CO2 level and <1ppm ingress of O2 over this period.
Transport & Handling
Kegs can be stacked up to four layers per pallet when empty and two layers per pallet when full. Kegs must be nestled together and need to be retained to the pallet by stretch or shrink wrapping to ensure no movement during transport. “A tight block of kegs and pallet must be created”, divider boards must be included in the block if another pallet is to be placed on top of the base layer.
Storage temperatures should not exceed 25°C (77°F), should be stored away from food and chemicals.
Typically 3 layers of palletised kegs are possible, it is critical kegs are nestled together, where the underside of a pallet is placed on a layer of kegs, divider boards/sheets are required to prevent any damage to the lower layer of kegs by underside of pallets. Unexpected movement of a consignment can cause damage to kegs and your product if the above instructions are not followed. In addition, all gaps between pallets and the container walls and/or doors need to be packed with dunnage to ensure the consignment is retained in position.

Over Temperature Protection
One-Way-Kegs should be kept out of direct sunlight at all times. In situations of high ambient temperature, that is 30°C (86°F) or higher it is strongly recommended thermal blankets be used, this will protect the quality of YOUR PRODUCT as well as the keg from extreme heat.
Ensure your containerised consignment is below waterline where possible, in conjunction with thermal blankets, ensure these needs are discussed with your logistics department and/or shipping agent.

One-Way-Kegs are compatible with standard MicroMatic® D/S/A/G couplers at normal dispense pressures of 50 to 250 kPa (7 to 36 psi).
In addition, the EcoKeg Valve is able to accommodate the coupler being attached for dispense, detached for line cleaning and reattached for dispense multiple times, as experienced with steel kegs.
Statement of Caution
Gas Pressure and One Way Kegs
Dispense gas pressure ranges between 50kpa to 320kpa depending on the beverage
Most dispense systems have gas pressure relief valves set to 400kpa
EcoKegs have a maximum working pressure of 350kpa. EcoKeg strongly recommends setting gas pressure relief systems at 300kpa
Other OWKs have a maximum working pressure of 300kpa to 350kpa
A reduced gas pressure relief valve setting will enable any keg type to dispense and will ensure that pressure relief will occur at or before maximum working pressure
IMPORTANT: gas pressure systems must be inspected and checked regularly. A faulty gas pressure system that introduces excessive pressure into any keg at high velocity can cause the keg to rupture, risking injury or death and damage to property
One-Way-Kegs are primarily made from high quality recyclable materials and generally have a value, can be sold to recyclers. It is important that the One-Way-Kegs are de-pressurised before collection “as described below”.
